United Methodist Women (UMW) is the group of women organized for mission. United Methodist Women is the successor organization to the home and foreign missionary societies, ladies aid groups and guilds of the 7 predecessor denominations of the United Methodist Church. The PURPOSE is stated in The Book of Discipline 2012: "United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative,
supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the
global ministries of the church". (par 1318)
Any woman who supports the Purpose and chooses to belong is a member. There are approximately 800,000 United Methodist Women in the United States and over 26,000 local units. Members gave more than $16 million to support mission world wide since 2008. UMW supports139 agencies, schools, clinics in the US and 299 world wide.
The United Methodist Women fund all of their work through their members. No funds come from the General Church.
The mission focus of United Methodist Women is to make a difference in the lives of women, children and youth. When a need is identified, an answer is sought. If mission is your passion, UMW is for you.
