Huntingdon College invites pastors and youth ministers who serve United Methodist churches in the Alabama-West Florida and North Alabama Conferences of The United Methodist Church to sponsor high school juniors and/or seniors to participate in the Huntingdon Leadership Academy (HLA) June 25-30, 2017.
COST: $100 per participant: $50 paid by the student, $50 paid by the church sponsor
With calling as its primary theme, the Huntingdon Leadership Academy (HLA) seeks to engage high school-aged youth each year through a summer theology program and a year-round online network to promote sustained theological reflection on the Bible, Christian tradition, and their spiritual experiences. A generous grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc., has allowed Huntingdon College to expand into the first week-long HLA summer experience for rising high school juniors and seniors. We invite pastors and youth pastors at churches in the Alabama-West Florida and North Alabama Conferences of the United Methodist Church to participate in the identification and building of future church leaders by nominating students for a theology institute at Huntingdon College, June 25–30. The week will focus on discernment of each student’s calling to ministry, and will provide mentoring, discussion of important current topics in the life of the church, cultural and mission-related events, and time for fun, praise, and worship. In addition, students will participate in year-long spiritual growth through several online engagement opportunities to allow for further education and community-building.
WHO SHOULD COME?
Current high school sophomores and juniors who have the gifts and graces for ministry of any sort—whether as deacons or elders, missionaries, music ministers, children’s or youth pastors, worship leaders, or lay leaders, among the many ways to minister—should plan to attend this retreat.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE ACADEMY?
The purpose of the Huntingdon Leadership Academy is to assist student leaders as they discern God’s call for who they should be and what they should do with their lives.
WHO IS RUNNING THE ACADEMY?
This five-day retreat is coordinated by the director of the Huntingdon Leadership Academy and executed in collaboration with Huntingdon Department of Religion faculty, Duke Divinity School faculty and consultants, area United Methodist clergy, Huntingdon student volunteers, and the College chaplain.
The leadership skills necessary for ministry are transferable to leadership in any area. Every participant will benefit from what he or she learns during the academy and the Church will benefit from the leadership these young leaders will be encouraged to give.
WHAT TYPES OF ACTIVITIES OR SESSIONS WILL BE INVOLVED?
Fellowship, worship, prayer, discussion, cultural and missional day projects, instruction, and time to relax and to have fun are built into the HLA schedule. Attendees will engage theological teaching from Huntingdon College and Duke Divinity School faculty, area ministers, and the College chaplain. All will have the opportunity to worship, laugh, and serve alongside one another.
HOW IT WORKS:
Nomination and registration forms opened November 1, 2016. Churches nominate youth who will be entering their junior or senior year of high school to participate in the year-long HLA program. Students participate in a week of summer residency at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, and take part in several online gatherings over the course of the year with members of their cohort and Huntingdon College faculty and staff. Together, churches and families contribute $100 of the cost per participant. The remaining cost is entirely covered through the generosity of the Lilly Endowment.
