Rev. Adam Hamilton presents “A Thinking Person’s Guide to the Christian Faith” The Dill Lecture Keynote Event 6:30PM-8:00PM Dauphin Way United Methodist Church Sanctuary In the last twenty years the number of Americans who identify as members of churches or faith communities has declined dramatically. The decline is particularly pronounced among young adults. Meanwhile an increasing number of people identify as “spiritual but not religious” or “nones” on surveys on religious preference. When asked about what keeps them from faith, skeptics often point to the challenge of reconciling faith with science, or reconciling suffering with a loving God. They point to perplexing passages in the Bible that seem inconsistent with Jesus, or to Christians whose faith seems antithetical to the faith Jesus taught. They are not anti-Jesus, just uncertain about Christianity. Do we have to choose between science and faith? Between rationality and Christianity? Does suffering and evil discredit faith, or does Christianity offer a meaningful and redemptive response to suffering? Must we reject the Bible for its challenging passages, or can we recognize its historical context and read these passages in the light of its overarching message? For every Christian who acts in unchristian ways, is it possible there are countless others whose faith compels them to acts of kindness, justice and love? Author and pastor Adam Hamilton honestly and openly engages the questions that have kept many from faith, while ultimately seeking to make the case for a compelling Christian faith, one that speaks to the intellect as well as the heart. Join us for an evening of meaningful conversation about the things that keep people from faith and inspirational responses offering a thinking person’s guide to faith.
