Super Sunday January 26, 2020 First United Methodist Church, Ozark 2:30-4:30 PM The District Core Values will be presented at our plenary session and these classes will be offered: Reading the Bible from a Wesleyan Perspective – Dr. Jason Borders, Chair of the Religion and Philosophy Department at Huntingdon College. Dr. Borders will share bible study methods which unlock a richer meaning of scripture. His presentation will introduce a series of lectionary based studies he will give throughout the year scheduled for March 8, June 14 and September 20, 6 pm at First United Methodist in Dothan. These classes are ideal for preachers who use the lectionary as well for lay people who want to go deeper with the biblical passages preached each Sunday. Learning New Ways to Preach – Dr. Sam Parkes, ThD in Homiletics, Senior Pastor Mary Esther United Methodist Church. Dr Parkes will introduce methods which enable pastors to truly engage a congregation during the sermon. He will also present the plan for a Monthly Lectionary Preaching Cohort, which will gather every fourth Thursday from 6-8 pm. Foundational Elements of Making Disciples – Rev. Mary Noble Parrish, Executive Pastor, Dothan First United Methodist Church. Reverend Parrish will present ideas to help churches of all sizes find ways to deepen the faith of persons in the pews. She will also introduce the district wide Disciple Making Workshop at St Luke UMC, Enterprise, on March 1 from 2:30-6:30 p.m. This event is led by Dr. Phil Maynard a long time United Methodist Pastor who has developed a Discipleship Pathway used by many different congregations. All churches are invited and encouraged to send persons to this Discipleship event on March 1 so ALL of our congregations can live out the district’s number one Core Value – “Growing Disciples that Make Disciples.” Contact the District office to register. Helping Your Pastor Flourish – Dr. Ed Glaize, District Superintendent. Dr Glaize will talk about the unique challenges pastors face and how these burdens can adversely affect them. He also will discuss ways for committees and congregations to support their pastors to enable clergy to flourish while serving God’s people. This is an ideal workshop for Pastor Parish Committee Members, but it is also for anyone who wants to see effective clergy persons within our churches.
