First United Methodist Church of Opelika, AL holds a high standard of musical excellence, and we are seeking an equally gifted individual to join our Music Ministries Staff. Applicants should have basic familiarity with the role of music in the Christian tradition, possess excellent musical skills as a pianist and as an accompanist, be versatile in regards to musical style, direct grade-level ensembles, work with volunteers, be able to take direction, and work well with other staff through a spirit of collaboration and creativity. Position Description The Associate Director of Music Ministries (Piano) will provide solo music as well as accompany the congregation and various ensembles in the worship at First United Methodist Church in Opelika. In addition, this position will direct and/or oversee either the Children’s Music Ministry or the Youth Choir. This position is directly supervised by the Director of Music Ministries and is also responsible to the Senior Pastor and the Staff-Parish Relations Committee. Specific Responsibilities 1. This position will be responsible for the preparation and execution of piano music during Sunday worship services and other special musical programs throughout the year. 2. This position will serve as the primary piano accompanist for ensembles and soloists. 3. This position will prepare for, attend, and play for weekly Chancel Choir and One Accord Youth Ensemble rehearsals, as well as special rehearsals as needed. 4. This position will direct and/or oversee grade level ensembles – either Children or Youth. 5. This position will attempt to be available as needed for funeral services. 6. This position will hold first right of refusal for wedding services in accordance with the wedding policies of First United Methodist Church. 7. This position will work with the Director of Music Ministries to see that the pianos in the Sanctuary, Choir Room, and Fellowship Hall are properly maintained and tuned. 8. This position will be available for regular music staff meetings as called by the Director of Music Ministries. 9. Any other tasks agreed upon with the Director of Music Ministries. Education/Experience Requirements A Bachelor’s degree in music (or higher) is preferred. At least two years of experience as a church pianist/accompanist is also preferred. Salary Commensurate to skill, education, and experience Work Schedule Approximately 20 hours per week average, including rehearsals, worship services, meetings, rehearsal preparation, and personal practice time. As in most church jobs, the work load fluctuates depending on the time of year. Vacation Four Wednesdays and four Sundays of paid vacation per year. The Director of Music Ministries must approve all vacations. If not using the Organist as a substitute musician, this position will find a substitute pianist with approval of the Director of Music Ministries.
