Aldersgate United Methodist Church of Montgomery, Alabama is looking to fill an immediate full-time position to direct our vibrant and growing youth department. We are a multi-generational congregation with both traditional and contemporary worship experiences. Our focus is living into our mission "To Know Jesus And To Make Him Known." This position is an integral part in the growth, planning, development and implementation of a vibrant youth ministry in the areas of group building, worship, spiritual formation, mission and outreach. STATUS: Full-time, Salaried HOURS: 40 Hours per week BENEFITS: Continuing Education Funds, Health Insurance & Pension assistance available General Purpose of Position: To lead youth and youth leaders to Know Jesus and Make Him Known through worship, small groups, service and missions while serving as a spiritual leader and role model. Organizational Relationship and Supervision: The Director of Youth Discipleship (DYD) reports to the Minister of Discipleship for spiritual and ministry guidance. The Minister of Discipleship, in cooperation with the Personnel Committee, provides an annual evaluation of the DYD’s performance. The DYD will be responsible and subject to Aldersgate United Methodist Church’s polity and doctrine. Attendance at the following meetings is expected: weekly discipleship meetings, monthly all-staff meetings, Aldersgate Leadership Council, Equip Team and others as requested. The Primary Task: Creating environments and developing systems for discipleship of youth shall be central to the work. These environments and systems will be based on loving youth where they are and encouraging them to develop their relationship with the Triune God. The environments and systems will seek where God is already at work in the lives of youth, engage youth to bring them to faith in Christ, equip youth for everyday life and ministry and deploy youth for God's mission. Responsibilities: 1. Be an advocate for youth and educate the congregation about the hopes, concerns and needs of youth in the local church and community. 2. Help plan, develop and implement a youth ministry in the areas of group building, worship, spiritual formation, mission and outreach. 3. Bring together youth leaders for evaluating vision, growth and goals of the youth ministry during regularly scheduled planning sessions. 4. Mentor youth in developing their leadership skills. 5. Be aware of resources for developing the youth ministry and to participate in continuing education events and training opportunities. 6. Recruit and train volunteers and interns who work with youth in all aspects of youth ministry and ensure adequate volunteer support and adult-to- youth ratios. 7. Be a liaison between the church and other community organizations, people and resources that relate to youth and youth ministries. 8. Coordinate Sunday School curriculum for youth (grades 6-12) and recruit teachers in partnership with the Minister of Discipleship. 9. Coordinate and teach Confirmation classes in partnership with the pastor(s) and provide leadership for confirmands, mentors and parents beyond the classroom. 10. Work in partnership with the Seek Team to effectively reach youth in the community and develop a strategic youth ministry outreach plan. 11. Organizational skills required through wise planning, time optimization, detail orientation and prioritization. 12. Ability to create, plan and monitor the youth budget through effective stewardship. 13. Communicate in a timely and efficient manner using any available resources (email, website, bulletin, newsletter, bulletin board, etc.). Ensure communication with church staff and leadership, parents and the congregation as a whole. 14. Be available to youth in a variety of ways (i.e. lunch at school, attendance at extracurricular activities, visitation, times of crisis, etc.) 15. Work in concert with the gifts and talents of other staff members and maintain a teamwork mentality. 16. Ensure that the Safe Sanctuary Policy of Aldersgate United Methodist Church is observed in all youth ministry settings. Qualifications and Aptitudes: 1. Must embrace Christian discipline and United Methodist doctrine and theology. 2. Completion of college degree or higher education (specific to Christian education/youth ministry is preferred). 3. Has effectively worked with youth in previous ministry experience either on a paid or volunteer basis. 4. Must approach ministry from the perspective of a lifelong learner, ever seeking opportunities and education that will refine and enhance the effectiveness of the youth ministry. 5. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, conflict management skills and computer skills. 6. Understands social media and appropriately uses the platforms for building up and encouraging others. 7. Must possess a proven ability to work effectively with youth and diverse individuals. 8. Build and lead Ministry Teams of diverse ages. 9. Assist with pastoral care for others in a manner which mirrors the way Jesus cared for people and taught his disciples to do the same. 10. Passion and expertise in Team Sports required supporting events on and off campus locations.
