DISASTER RESPONSE

The AWF Conference Disaster Response & Recovery Ministry is committed to providing the loving presence of Christ as we respond to natural disasters within our conference and across the connection.  As groundwork, the ministry provides a framework of resources and training for the local church and district, thus strengthening response within their communities. 

Trained AWF Conference Early Response Teams (ERT) enter a disaster recovery area upon invitation. The ministry programs are developed to build and deploy trained volunteer teams to begin the relief process of cleanup and debris removal, tarping, etc. after first responders have been into the area. 

A Conference Response Team to facilitate local churches is in the developmental stage and should be in place by mid-summer, 2008.  Contact information will be listed on the web site

There are four zones in our conference:.

Zone 1 Districts: Demopolis and Montgomery/Prattville

Zone 2 Districts: Montgomery/Opelika and Dothan

Zone 3 Districts: Marianna/Panama City and Pensacola

Zone 4 Districts: Mobile and Baypines

I was pleased to read Bishop Goodpastor's September 24 letter to the AL-WF Conference members. He quoted a "USA Today" article recounting the number of faith-based groups coming to work in hurricane relief. As a Methodist I joined the Bishop in his pride when the article stated "the largest group of volunteer-servants-in-ministry people came from The United Methodist Church – 56,656 to be exact."

There is no doubt in my mind that this Methodist response is due in large part to the involvement of Alabama - West Florida Conference Disaster Recovery Ministry led by Rev. Clyde Pressley.

We are indeed fortuante to count this ministry among our Conference resources.
