Frequently Asked Questions

How can my church save money on software, computers and peripherals?

You may want to check out the savings available by ordering software, computers and other products through the United Methodist Communications' TECHSHOP. Significant discounts are offered to United Methodist organizations on products supplied by Microsoft, Dell, Apple, Insight and Cisco. Go to their web site at www.techshopministry.org.

My church wants to do a booklet. Is there a software program that will enable us to do that?

Blue Squirrell software (www.bluesquirrel.com) has a product called "ClickBook".  It will format not only a booklet, but virtually any other type of document, including reducing or enlarging to fit whatever paper size you want to use.

You still have to lay out the material the way you want it to appear, but you can use Word or any page layout program to do that.  Clickbook doesn't let you manipulate the content of the document, but it does the formating, pagination, etc. and does it quite well.

Do we need to have permission to put people's photos on our church website?

Since most church events are public, you do not need to obtain permission to take people's photos. If you are concerned about permission, then get it if you are going to use a photo of an individual. However, if you are using a group photograph taken at a public event, you do not need to obtain permission.

However, you do want to have a policy about how you identify children and youth. One suggestion is to not identify children ages 3 or younger by name, identify older children by first name only. Adults may be identified with full names. If you are taking photos of children with special needs, you may need to obtain permission.

What software do you suggest to fight viruses and spyware?

Spyare is a problem.  One of the best and free is Ad-Aware, they consistently get good reviews.  You can visit their site at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download to learn more and get a copy.  It's easy to use and they provide free updates as well to keep it current.

Another decent program (which some people may prefer, but is not nearly as user friendly, but again free) is Spyboy Search and Destroy at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
