Bishops Day Apart will be held February 21, 2017, at Dothan FUMC. Fellowship and registration will be begin at 9am. The event will begin at 10am and conclude at 3pm.

Rev. Jerry Herships, a UMC pastor in the Denver area, and Claire Bowen, a lay leader in the North GA Conference, will be the guests.

Jerry’s story is a familiar one: Former bartender/stand-up comic and mall Santa hears God’s call to leave the bright lights of show biz and dedicate his life to doing the Lord’s work. You’ve heard it a million times...

Jerry was born in Detroit and lived in both L.A. and Orlando, working in radio, T.V., film. During Jerry’s stand-up career, he worked with Dick Clark, Jerry Seinfeld and Olympia Dukakis and was a contract writer for Jay Leno. He earned his Master's of Divinity from Iliff School of Theology and was ordained in the United Methodist Church in 2009. He was appointed to plant a new church, AfterHours Denver, in the downtown metro area, focusing on the poor and spiritually independent. He is Chief Love Monger and Lead Spiritual Entrepreneur of that faith & action community. AfterHours Denver currently hands out food, water, and communion to 700+ people each week in Civic Center Park. In recent years, AfterHours has been written about in the Denver Post, Denver’s 5280 Magazine, and has been profiled on a number of network affiliates.

Jerry was recently honored to receive Iliff School of Theology’s first ever Innovation in Ministry award. His first book LAST CALL, was recently published by Westminster John Knox. More information on him can be found here.

This year’s day apart will look a little different than previous years. The sessions will be a bit more interactive than perhaps you’re used to experiencing. The topic is entitled, “That'll Preach! How to Make Your Message Stick.” Rev. Herships will explore his innovative techniques to engage all personality types through your sermons. Jerry will give a similar presentation that he did last year at the Fred Craddock Center in Cherry Log, North Carolina. You will walk away with practical knowledge to further engage your congregations. Claire Bowen will facilitate a 15-minute Communications Style Preference assessment at the beginning of our session that will allow us to better understand how we engage with differing personalities. We are also asking that you bring a rough-draft sermon you are working on that is not Wifi dependent, perhaps it is your Easter sermon or Ash Wednesday sermon. We will break into small groups and have time to work on it together. Please bring your tablet, laptop or a printed copy—whatever you are most comfortable with to access your work in progress. You can expect great laughter, lots of fun, appreciable learning and a sermon that will preach and stick! Because we will be breaking out into groups at tables and possibly sitting on the floor in small groups, let me encourage you to come casual! Your blue jeans are welcome! This is a change from previous years but it is our goal that you arrive comfortable ready to work together. Please register as soon as possible so that we can have an accurate head count for lunch. We will all eat together on campus at Dothan FUMC. Register, come casual, bring a sermon, prepare to have fun together!

The day will conclude with worship and the gathering of clergy orders. The Order of Deacons and Order of Elders will each spend time with one another before the event concludes. The Fellowship of Local Pastors and Associate Members will meet in February

Registration is $20 and includes lunch.
