The New Church @ 301 Dexter (formerly Dexter Ave UMC) in Montgomery, Alabama seeks a talented part-time music director as they embark on a journey as a new missional United Methodist church in a historic church building in downtown Montgomery. The ideal candidate will be a pianist, organist, or a vocalist who can recruit instrumentalists. This candidate must bring energy, passion, and a heart for God to create and build a distinguished music ministry. We strongly desire openness to music from a variety of traditions. The Director will have the experience and ability to draw upon many musical styles and traditions to create a blended worship service. The Music Director position is expected to require a minimum of 20 hours per week. College students or recent graduates majoring in music or theatre are also encouraged to apply. Responsibilities
Musical
1. Plan Sunday services in consultation with the minister or other service leaders, selecting choral and piano/organ music, scheduling soloists and choirs.
2. Play the piano or organ (or other instrument/vocals) during Sunday morning worship and in the future, possibly a mid-week noon service.
3. Be available to play organ/piano as required for services such as weddings, funerals. Create ad hoc vocal or instrumental groups to expand the musical experiences available to musicians within the congregation or to draw in new members.
4. Recruit additional singers from the community. Contract other musicians as needed for services.
5. Be open to creating occasional special musical events in the church in collaboration with the worship committee or other groups.
Administrative
1. In collaboration with the minister and Worship Committee, provide input for the annual budget for the music program.
2. Submit weekly musical selections in a timely manner to the minister and office administrator to be included in the Order of Service.
3. Select and order new music and maintain the choral music library.
4. Attend regular staff meeting and worship committee meetings (ex officio). Attend other church meetings as necessary to collaborate and represent the musical programs of the church.
5. Reach out to and interact with other professional musicians in the area.

Time Commitment and Salary
The Music Director position is approximately 20-25 hours per week during the year. The Instruments
The pipe organ, originally built in 1914 by Henry Pilcher’s Sons of Louisville, KY, is one of the older pipe organs in the city, known not only for the quality of its tone, but for the beauty of the cabinets and pipes. The sanctuary is also equipped with a Yamaha G1 grand piano.
