St. Andrew United Methodist Church (SAUMC) is seeking a part time youth minister.
General Description: The Youth Minister leads a Christian ministry to those who are members and nonmembers, that fosters faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and equips youth to be in ministry to other youth. The Youth Minister is hired by the Staff Pastor Relations Committee (SPRC) and reports to the Senior Pastor. As well, the Youth Minister shall perform her/his responsibilities under the direction and supervision of the Senior Pastor, complying with guidelines in the SAUMC Employee Handbook and other employee policies that may be adopted. The Youth Minister shall meet with the Senior Pastor for clarification of the vision for this ministry, strategic planning, and for guidance, prayer and support. (This may also include telephone contacts and email.) The Youth Minister shall be evaluated annually by the Senior Pastor. Questions or problems related to the job should be discussed with the Senior Pastor. The SPRC will also be available to provide support and hear concerns.
Work hours are approximately 15 hours per week.
Salary: $10,000 annually
Primary Responsibilities: Provide consistent weekly worship, discussion, and prayer to enable youth to grow in a life of faith, a life of faith characterized by the knowledge and love of God and by love of self and others. Planning, conducting, coordinating, evaluating, and selecting and providing resources for the church’s ministry to youth. Build relationships of integrity with youth that become the basis of meeting needs, sharing Christ, and involving youth in peer ministry with other youth, including outreach and visitation --visiting students at school, attending various school and community activities. Coordinate all aspects of the 6-12 grade youth group, ensuring there is opportunity to develop fellowship, spiritual formation, discipleship, and the experience of Christian community. Various material and age appropriate styles of presentation are encouraged. Opportunity should also be given for youth to plan mission responses, witness events, fellowship experiences and trips as well as other recreational activities. Organize youth, parent, and volunteer leadership team to deal with concerns and views of the youth group. Develop relationships and maintain regular communication with parents of participating youth. Meet with the youth team periodically to schedule, plan, and carry out all youth ministry activities. This includes delegating appropriate responsibilities to members of the youth team and other youth workers to carry out parts of those plans. Develop SAUMC youth ministry handbook for discipline, outings, and other pertinent information. Coordinate roles and responsibilities of volunteer leaders of the youth group. Provide support, encouragement, Christian community and spiritual nurture for volunteer youth workers through leadership retreats, training, and regular prayer/support meetings. Weekly attendance at worship at SAUMC. Perform other relevant tasks requested/assigned by the Senior Pastor. Administrative Responsibilities: Attend and participate in worship at SAUMC, staff meetings, Administrative Council, Charge Conference, and other committee meetings as determined necessary by the Senior Pastor. Submit and administer a youth budget in consultation with the youth team, ministerial staff, and Finance Committee and an annual summary report of the mission, goals, plans, and successes in youth ministry to the Administrative Council and Charge Conference. Conduct the youth ministry in compliance with the church Safe Sanctuary policies. Promote youth program through the use of church bulletin, newsletter, web site, and other forms of communications, as applicable.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Requirements: Belief in Saint Andrew’s mission, methods, principles, and structure. A personal commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, as well as a strong desire to serve within the church. A sense of calling to youth ministry. Ability to work with youth. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to plan, organize, lead, and guide complex projects and spontaneous activities related to youth ministries. Competence in basic lay counseling and listening skills appropriate for youth ministry. Willingness to work cooperatively with others, to maintain a positive outlook and disposition , and to be flexible in solving problems. The ability to protect the reputation and integrity of others through strict confidentiality. Refraining from indiscriminately sharing personal information is critical. Discretion must be exercised when dealing with the public, youth and their parents, and the church’s leaders and members. Experience in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Publisher, and Windows 8 (or later versions) is preferred Experience with social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) is preferred.
Education and Other Requirements: Minimum high school diploma with college-level or higher course work in Christian Education and/or youth ministry desired. In addition, this position requires a satisfactory security check, complete Safe Sanctuary training, be a minimum age of 21 to comply with the requirements of the SAUMC Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC).
