Director of Choirs - Part Time - Perdido Bay UMC (Pensacola, FL)


Perdido Bay United Methodist Church (PBUMC) is searching for a part time Director of Choirs with the following qualifications:

  • High musical competency preferably with a degree in music, music education, music ministry, choral conducting, or a related field
  • Strong musical and singing skills
  • Passion to lead people to Christ through music
  • Two years minimum experience serving as a staff and/or volunteer in congregational worship
  • Knowledge of and experience in traditional worship styles
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrates good leadership and organizational skills
  • Must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and can freely share their faith experiences to help church members and volunteers develop their own spiritual lives
  • Must understand and support the teachings and principles of the United Methodist Church
  • Must be able to work as a productive team member of the PBUMC Staff by developing supportive relationships with co-workers
  • Must be committed to excellence in planning and execution of worship
  • Embraces the need to recruit, train, and involve new members in the music ministry
  • Must be comfortable with a range of music from hymns to contemporary
Duties Include:
  • Plan, direct and implement a music ministry for the Traditional services, which will serve to enrich, inspire and lead the congregation of PBUMC in their corporate worship experiences. This program will involve all age levels, children, youth, and adults, and provide the opportunity for those persons to use their musical talents as a ministry in worship, and allow them to be ministered to through their involvement
  • To develop new and foster current volunteers to assist in the management of the music ministry, i.e. music database, music library, musician coordination
  • Lead the congregational singing in the traditional worship services
  • Help recruit, select and train talent for the traditional choirs
  • Able to develop an atmosphere for worship that is creative, positive, authentic, and dynamic
  • Able to work patiently and helpfully with both professional and non-professional musicians and singers while assuring proper preparation time and rehearsals to obtain the best performance results
  • Able to appreciate and work in both traditional and contemporary styles of worship
  • Ensure that the sanctuary and worship setting is properly arranged for worship services and special productions
  • Order music and plan an appropriate annual worship budget for traditional worship and special musical events while in keeping within copyright laws
  • Disciple, encourage and pray with the musicians and singers
  • Work with the church accompanist, organist and other musicians
  • Ensure proper maintenance of musical instruments
  • Maintain communication and good rapport with the senior pastor and staff
  • Have an understanding of and appreciation for Wesleyan theology and United Methodist history and be able to work within those guidelines
  • Share the church’s vision of reaching the lost for Christ, the community and beyond
  • Lead and rehearse each week with the adults’ choirs and children’s choir, and participate in the Worship planning meeting, preferably in person if possible
  • Support various other musical ensembles and provide leadership as needed
  • Acquire and rehearse new music
  • Prepare and direct choirs and ensembles for no less than three special musical programs each year (Lenten and Easter, Advent and Christmas, and one or two children’s programs) and any joint service planned by the pastors while working harmoniously with the Contemporary Worship Leader to incorporate the Praise Band
